Sometimes, the effect from a polarizer filter can be subtle. Scenes with less polarized light (reflections, glare, etc.) won't always make the impact of a polarizer readily apparent. If you find yourself wondering whether a given polarizer filter works correctly, you can test the filter's functionality using the following steps:
- Hold up the polarizer filter in front of an LCD or OLED monitor (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) which is powered on. It does not matter what the monitor displays, as long as it is lit up.
- Make sure the filter is facing in the correct direction (the way it would face if installed on a camera lens). Polarizers only work in one direction, which is why this step is important.
- Begin rotating the filter, and look through it. As viewed through the polarizer glass, the monitor should go from normal to blank (and then back again) as the filter is rotated.
If the screen does go blank when the filter is rotated, as in the example above, then the polarization is working normally. This result should be the same with polarizer-hybrid filters like the VND/PLs as well.
