Product Availability
Are the Helix filters available with sellers outside the US?
Yes! We'd recommend checking with your nearest distributor to see if they (or any other resellers they supply) stock the Helix filter models.
General FAQs
How large are the filters?
The Helix frames measure 101mm in diameter. Helix filters do not have threading, and will require a Helix Base Plate to be used.
How can I use my Helix filters on lenses the Base Plates don't natively fit?
In many cases, the Helix Base Plates can be stacked with one or more step-up rings. In this way, the system can be adapted to fit non-native lens sizes, such as 49mm or 62mm.
Can I adapt my existing threaded filters to the Helix Base Plates?
No. The Helix Base Plates will accept the dedicated Helix MagLock filters only.
What's the difference between the various Helix filter lineups (Burkard, McKinnon, Shortstache, etc.)?
In terms of the filter frames, they're the same. We've just divided the filters up into lineups geared toward video (McKinnon) and photo (Burkard and Shortstache), based on the shooting style of each of those creators respectively.
Can I stack the Burkard, Shortstache, and McKinnon filters?
Yes! We're happy to confirm the Burkard, Shortstache, and McKinnon filters use the same frames, so they're stackable as well as interchangeable. Please note we recommend against stacking separate VNDs and polarizers (more info here). For that, you'd want a Helix VND/PL filter instead.
Are the Helix filters compatible with matte boxes?
No, they are not.
Can Helix filters be used with lens hoods?
Generally not. Helix filters are wider in diameter than most lenses they'll be compatible with, meaning there would be no room left over for most stock lens hoods.
Do the Helix VNDs have haptic feedback on rotation?
The only Helix filters with haptic feedback at this time are the Chroma VND/PL models. Any other Helix VNDs will rotate smoothly through the stops.
How wide can I shoot with these filters before I'll see a vignette?
Vignetting will start to occur between 16-19mm (full-frame) on most lenses. For lenses with 95mm threads, this lower limit increases to 40mm.
